تدور أحداث الفيلم حول (ميلاني باركر)، وهي مهندسة معمارية وأم لـ(سامي)، و(جاك تايلور)، وهو كاتب عمود صحفي وأب لـ(ماغي). كلاهما مطلقان. يلتقيان ذات صباح عندما يُترك (جاك) المُنهَك بشكلٍ غير متوقع مع (ماغي) وينسى أن (ميلاني) ستأخذها إلى المدرسة. نتيجة لذلك، يفوّت كلا الطفلين رحلة المدرسة الميدانية ويُضطَرّان للبقاء مع والديهما. يُظهِر كل من البالغين أحكاماً مسبقة سلبية عن أزواجهما السابقين، لكنهما يضطران في النهاية إلى الاعتماد على بعضهما البعض لرعاية الأطفال، حيث يتعين على كل منهما الحفاظ على وظيفته. يُضفي (سامي) الذي يميل إلى إدخال الأشياء في أنفه، و(ماغي) التي تميل إلى التّيه، لمسة من الفكاهة على الأحداث.
