تدور أحداث الفيلم حول (ألكسندر كوبر)، فتى يبلغ من العمر 12 عامًا، يعيش حياةً مليئة بالمشاكل التي يراها هو فقط، بينما تعتقد عائلته أنه مبالغ في ردود أفعاله. قبل يوم من عيد ميلاده الثاني عشر، يكتشف أن جميع أصدقائه مدعوون إلى حفل عيد ميلاد صبي آخر، بالإضافة إلى تعرضه لمضايقات إلكترونية من أحد الأطفال. في منتصف ليلة عيد ميلاده، يتمنى (ألكسندر) أن تعيش عائلته يوماً سيئاً. ويتحقق أمنيته، حيث تعطل سيارة والدته، مما يجبرهم على مشاركة سيارة واحدة. كما تصاب أخته بنزلة برد شديدة وتضطر للصعود على خشبة المسرح. أما شقيقه الأكبر، الذي يأمل في الحصول على رخصة قيادة ليأخذ صديقته لحضور حفل التخرج، فيواجه غرور صديقته، ويفشل في اجتياز اختبار رخصة القيادة. وتواجه والدته أزمة عمل قد تُكلفها وظيفتها، بينما يضطر والده، الذي لديه مقابلة عمل مهمة، إلى اصطحاب أخيه الأصغر معه، والذي يصرخ باستمرار بسبب تلف مصاصته. يشعر (ألكسندر) بالمسؤولية عن كل ما حدث لعائلته.
